Charter Standard Community Club – Since October 2012
“Plantation Youth FC was formed in 1983 when it established a single U16 team and played in the Bishop’s Stortford Youth League. The following year an under 10 team was added which proved to be very successful, winning their league in the first season and so began a long line of successful teams. Within a few years the club grew and established a team in every age group and this continued until the advent of mini-soccer and Saturday football in the late nineties.
The club was initially slow to embrace the new format and by 2004 was left with only 3 teams but a drive for more players in the youngest age groups and the recruitment of more coaches has seen significant growth, indeed now there are 14 teams this season from U7-15, this includes the introduction of an affiliated girls club currently with 2 teams. In addition, Saturday morning coaching is provided for U6s which are affectionately known as, ‘The Little Herberts’.
For the first 3 years of its life, Plantation Youth FC had no permanent home ground, but in 1986 moved onto the newly developed, council owned Herberts Farm ground in Saffron Walden where we remain to this day. Earlier this year we signed a lease on our ground at Herberts Farm which has now enabled us to seek significant investment for the redevelopment of the grounds and facilities, work that is currently on going.
The club joined the Cambridge & District Colts League in 1993 where the majority of our older teams continue to play, though two teams play in the Royston Crow League which they joined in 2011. The younger teams play in the Cambridgeshire Mini-Soccer League.
To achieve the Charter Standard Community status is a great honour and a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers who have worked so diligently over the years and it is a particularly fitting way to celebrate our 30th anniversary in 2013.
